What is Art Digitization?

Art digitization is the process of taking an original artwork such as a painting or even an old vintage photograph, and scanning or professionally photographing the piece as a form of archival preservation + reproduction.

The digitization process can take a bit of time, as it is done with intention. Proofing is often done on the preferred media type that you would like eventual replicas made on. General turnaround times for most digitization projects range from 5-10 "Giclée business days", from start to finish.

A Little More About the Process...
In most cases, scanning artwork isn't perfect right out of the gate. Even professionally calibrated scanners can have trouble matching complex colors, intricate metallics, and unique qualities of artsists' chosen mediums- the magic really happens in the proofing! This often timely process requires multiple rounds of color "touch-ups" to match the printed versions to the original art as best as we possibly can. Once we believe we've nailed it, artists are encouraged to approve a finalized proof before official prints start being made. However, in most cases, our repeat customers have come to trust our abilities and prefer to skip straight to the printing to save on time!

Our main tool we use for digitization is the Epson Expression 12000XL flat bed scanner. This allows us to scan up to an incredible 2400dpi.... (hey, you never know when your art will be requested for a billboard!) Not to worry if your artwork measures larger than our Epson's 12" x 17" bed; we simply scan larger pieces in sections, using Photoshop to stitch them together to create one seamless image.

For more sensitive mediums such as charcoal and pastels, we prefer to abide by a "touch-free" vertical digitization method and photograph the artwork in a portrait studio environment. We then use similar techniques as traditional digitizing to acquire the desired final image resolution needed.
